West Ham to Offload Ljungberg

The Daily Mail claim that West Ham have been touting Freddie Ljungberg around other clubs "as the Hammers revert to giving youth a chance." To back up their claim they point out that Tomkins and Sears have both made their débuts in the last couple of weeks.

Of course Tomkins' emergence this season as a viable centre back for the club must make Ljungberg's position on the wing untenable. Either that or The Mail think that the club are planning to play one of the most exciting strikers to emerge from the Academy down the flanks. Or (and I know this sounds unlikely) The Mail are telling porkies again.

It could be an attempt to lower our wage bill - an alleged 80,000 a week could be spent elsewhere

He started the season poorly, but has performed really well in recent months. His wages may be high, but is another player of that caliber really going to be much less expensive? you cud argue that for similar money we might be able to find a player 5 years younger and with more of a future, but in terms of the Premiership wage structure,it is what it is. If the club has real top 6 aspirations ,it s not going to be easy to avoid paying out big wages . What the club can do going forward is do a better job of purchasing players with good fitness records,as opposed to players with a history of injury problems. Offloading players with little chance of first team action ,such as Quashie and Davenport ,seems much more realistic than the Mail s drivel, even if what we got for those 2 players was a pittance.
