West Ham in Disarray

With West Ham seemingly doomed to relegation this season the newspapers have begun to start seriously questioning what is wrong at West Ham.

The Sun says that part of the problem is that the players dislike Avram Grant's number 2, Zeljko Petrovic. The paper quotes 'a West Ham insider' saying,

"I think to a man the players don't like him. They think he is full of himself for someone with so little experience of football over here."

The Daily Express have started considering who West Ham could get in to replace Grant,

"Martin O’Neill? Out of work, though surely not out of his mind to take on such an onerous task. Alan Pardew? Available and apparently keen to return, but he could not arrest Charlton’s decline in a similar position. Alan Curbishley? Not an appointment to unite disgruntled supporters given the acrimonious circumstances of how his previous reign ended."

However the paper also say that, "It says much that Grant’s tenure may run simply by default, a lack of replacements and a hefty contract keeping him in place."

The Independent quote David Gold saying that Avram Grant will not be replaced,

"We have to accept we are bottom of the league but there's no question of a change of manager now. But we must do better."

Whilst I agree that the irons need to replace Grant, we've got to point the finger more at our defence which is absolutely shocking as we've seen on numerous occasions this season. Until we can get that sorted we gonna struggle all season. A creative midfielder and a proven striker wouldn't go amiss either. Any thoghts on January transfers which i reckon can't come fast enough.

A few names to throw into the fire @Chris Commons of Derby, Peter whittingham Cardiff, Jo from Man City, Wayne Bridge, Robbie Keane and get rid of Behrami (useless) Kovac (even worse) Upson (over rated) Cole (lazy) Ilunga (yet another shocker) and retire Gabbidon (a liability). Can someone please tell me why we let Collins go to Villa??? Any thoughts

To ANONYMOUS 12.02 agree with u almost 99% but cole is still very valuable he and others arnt havin a good year he is only 24 and still young with heaps of ability so keep him for sure the reast defenetly go , lo said the same question on collins but thats gone we need more attacking midfielders get rid of grant and bring back zola he at least got us 9th in his first year so he had an ability to manage us . One thing As a guy who lives in Australia and loves any kind of sport the club who gets rid of coaches so often dont get anywhere always swaping coaches dont get teams/clubs anywhere clubs need stability it is as simlple as that Hammers 4 Ever

So much panic talk on here. BTW 'almost 99%' is probably about 98%!! ;)

Our central defence is our biggest problem right now, not the manager. All of our managers in recent years have struggled to stabilise the club and all have had at least one season fighting relegation. Swapping managers is not the answer, especially when we have a proven manager with history of success.

If we start keeping goals out we will win matches. It's as simple as that. This is why the Collins comment above is probably the best one so far. Our defence hasn't been the same since he left. To answer the question though, we sold him to make money because at the time we were in financial dire straits. It had to be done but I don't see what is stopping us from trying to get him back.

He alone is not the answer though. The defence needs alot of work to start keeping out these cr@p goals that teams keep scoring against us. A win with a clean sheet and a good defensive performance is the first thing we need.

David Golds quote "we have do do better" no S**t
i agree with most of above get rid of Grant now!! we need West Ham guys in charge guys who know what it means to pull on that glourious shirt we need Sir Trevor, De Canio, Alvin (to sort defence out)and i would have Pardew back to head it up promotion and a cup final Remember!!!!! and 11 players on the pitch who understand what the shirt stands for like Noble and Collison.
On a lighter note here is my plan!!!
1. Employ all above now!!
2. Declare war on the Iceland.
3. Bomb Sp**s on the way back from bombing Iceland.
4. Sell all players with the surname kovac now.

God i feel better for getting that off my chest hope it cheered you up to!

Without question ,from the moment we sold Collins ,we were on the slippery slope. Agree that if we are to survive ,we must stop conceding soft goals and muststart closing down space all over the pitch

I disagree that we "had" to sell Collins. That is nonsense. If the previous owners had not spent stupid amounts of money on things that had nothing to do with on-field activity ,we woul dnot have had to sell him. In addition, there was no need to sign Kovac ,or spend money on Jimenez's loan.

Finally,if we absolutely "had " to raise 5 million pounds by selling Collins(even it meant risking the 100 million pound pus cost of going down) we could have sold various players to come up with that . Sears,Spector,Stanislas,Tomkins,Boa Morte,Faubert etc. Even if we had to sell ALL of those to come up with 5 million quid ,that would have made more sense than selling Collins. The sale of Collins has to be one of the dumbest transactions West Ham have been done EVER. Absolutely braindead, which is typical of the Icelandics

It looks dreadful. BUT the gap remains 5 points only, so it is NOT too late. IF WE CAN START TO DEFEND PROPERLY

It's not that we had to sell Collins. It was simply that we had to sell someone. I see Collins as the only player that would sell for that price and the only player who we had offers for. With that being the situation (regardless of what the Icelandics done beforehand) what should the club do? Risk going into administration just to keep one player?

To sell any player you need a reasonable offer to come in from a club that the player wants to go to. It has to be profitable for all parties. You can't just say 'I think I'll sell Boa Morte for £5m' and a cheque instantly appears on your desk. Also selling half the team to protect one player is the sort of decision that causes rifts in a club and people to be sacked.

I never liked the idea of selling Collins and I agree with anyone who says it was a mistake in footballing terms. But if the club was forced to do it for financial reasons then we need to respect that, especially if it helped keep the club afloat.

The surrounding issues including how the club got into that financial situation in the first place, why we had a shortage of good strikers (which contributed to our need to sell Collins) and why Collins was never adequately replaced are a different matter altogether.

WH have too many fringe players. If i managed em, Id sell all those mentioned above besides Illunga and Cole [obviously] and buy a decent CB. [what about a loan deal for Johnny Evans and Richie de Laet?]

thay didnt have to sell collins. They could (and should) have sold Upson instead, but it was when City were spending silly money and they were holding out for £15mill for him. If we're so fucked financially, how the fuck did boa morte get a new contract this summer?our defense was solid when clarke was assistant and collins was still here and illunga actually had a a good first season. illunga for some reason has gone to shit...great decision by G&S to let Daprella, who wasnt on big wages, go for free to Brescia!? but i think gabbidon da costa make a decent central defensive pairing when fit...jacobsen and faubert are both mediocre options at right back. i dont even want to talk about the joke that is upson.

Boa Morte's new contract sums up G&S! Although they claim to be 'west ham fans', they can't have watched many games over the last few seasons because LBM has been abysmal in 95% of them! 1 goal in the final game of the season earns you a 2 year contract! BAFFLING AT BEST!
