De Costa In, Savio Out

West Ham have announced that Savio has been sold to ACF Fiorentina with the club receiving an undisclosed fee (which The Telegraph say is £5 million) and Portuguese centre-back Manuel Da Costa in return. West Ham have also retained 50 per cent of Savio's sell-on value in the future.

Savio has reportedly been unhappy with life in England. In recent weeks the club have been saying that he was suffering from a virus but it seems that he has been finding it increasingly difficult to settle at West Ham.

The arrival of 20 year old, Da Costa, a Portuguese Under-21 international defender, seems to herald the departure of Upson or Collins in the next 24 hours. Hopefully a striker will then be on the way in.

Da Costa is 23. Savio is 20.

It seemed to me that the decision to let Savio go may also have been linked to the progress made by Junior Satanislas who has quite clearly moved above him in the epcking order, as have maybe Hines and Nouble. With hindsight, and to some without that benefit the purchase of Savio seemed to be at odds with our need to sign strikers who could make an immediate impact, and a luxury we could ill afford at the time.
